FYI
Often we are asked "Where and what is Ft. Howard, MD"? Ft. Howard was one of five forts constructed to protect the city of Baltimore, MD from invasion by sea after the War of 1812. It was constructed on the northern shore of the mouth of the Patapsco River. The other forts that were built to protect the city of Baltimore are: Ft. Smallwood, Ft. Armistead, Ft. Carroll, and Ft. McHenry - which is the fort that inspired our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner".
Ft. Howard proudly stands today, but is currently used as a Veterans Administration (VA) hospital.
Most boaters on the upper Chespeake Bay know the Ft. Howard "lighthouse", which is actually the Craighill Channel Upper Range Front Light, pictured below.
